Network: Speed Test
How Fast Are You Going?
From time to time you may want to test the speed of your Internet connection. Use our online Speed and VoIP test.
Our test checks the speed and quality of your service for VoIP which is the most demanding of all Internet services including terminal services and VPN's.
The test measures seven variables affecting speed and six affecting VoIP. The variables include jitter, packets lost, packets disgarded and packets out of order. The test includes a Connect Summary and how many VoIP lines your service can support.
The test includes two results which do not apply at this time. They are:
Packet loss: server --> you:
Jitter: server --> you:
For ADSL speed tests, please realize the speed test statistics will report data transferring at about 85% of the speed your ADSL service sync's up at. The remaining 15% is used by control information, also know as overhead, that ensures data packets go where they are supposed to, and in the correct order. Overhead alsoapplies to wireless and fibre connections.
A BIT About the Numbers
We want to make sure you understand the results of your research. The following points help it all make sense.
ADSL Speeds
Skyway ADSL connections are sold with an upload speed of 1 Megabit per second (Mbps) and a download speed of 3.0 or 6.0 Mbps. Downloads are generally measured in Kilobytes per second (KB/s) and 1 Mbps is 125.0 KB/s. These are theoretical maximums before taking into consideration 15% overhead and packet loss as you approach the connection's maximum speed.
Below is how we convert 1 Mbps to 125.0 KB/s.
We know:
1 Megabit per second (Mbps) = 1000 Kilobits per second (Kbps)
There are eight Kbps in a Kilobytes per second (KB/s)
Therefore,
1.0 Mbps = 1000 Kbps
1000 Kbps/8 = 125.0 KB/second
3.0 Mbps download is 375 KB/second
6.0 Mbps download is 750.0 KB/second
