Information Disclosed in Spam Message Body
Most of the Spam message body itself is not very interesting to us. However, if the body includes any of the following information, we can use it to make the spammer's life a little more miserable:
- Drop Boxes - while the E-mail addresses in the header are almost always forged, sometimes the spammer really does want to receive E-mail back from people interested in whatever they are selling. In these cases, they may include a valid E-mail address in the body of the message, where they hope only people interested in their wares will find it. This is usually located at a free E-mail provider, like Hotmail or Yahoo. Record this address.
- Web Site URLs - if the Spam advertises any web site URLs (or Spamvertizes them as it's known), keep track of those. Most ISPs forbid advertising web sites by Spam, so we can go after their web site hosting ISP.
- Toll Free numbers - if the Spam includes 1-800, 1-888 or 1-877 numbers, record those. The spammer doesn't mind wasting your resources, and later on we'll talk about returning the favour.
