Don't Use An HTML-aware E-mail Client

If your E-mail client automatically reads and displays HTML-formatted messages (HTML is a presentation markup language designed for web sites), it could be violating your privacy. Many such clients will load and display IMG tags in the message from remote servers. E-mail "marketers" use Web Bugs, tiny clear images, loaded in such a fashion to track who reads their E-mail, and when.

Not only does this tell them who read a particular message, but in conjunction with Cookies, it can tie your E-mail address to your online browsing history.

The most popular HTML-aware mail client, Microsoft Outlook Express, of course also has a long, sad history of automatically executing viruses, which makes it dangerous to run under any circumstances.
