Complain to the Open Relay Operator and Their ISP
If you determine that you have received Open Relay Spam, you need to complain to the owner of the Open Relay and their ISP.
Use traceroute and whois for TCP/IP addresses, as well as whois for Domain Names to determine the domain name of the owner of the Open Relay, and the ISP, and contact E-mail addresses for both (separately). Make sure and report the input point in the case of a multi-hop relay.
Forward the entire Spam, including all of the headers, to the contact addresses for the operator of the Open Relay, along with a brief message along the lines of:
To: abuse@customerdomain.com,additional_addresses
From: your_address
Subject: Open Relay - ip_address_of_relay - re: [subject line of forwarded message]
Attention organization_name,
I have received the following Unsolicited Commercial E-mail, or Spam.
Based on an analysis of the headers, this Spam appears to have come to me
via a system under your control. I believe the system at
ip_address_of_open_relay is configured to be an Open Relay. Please see
http://www.mail-abuse.org/tsi/ar-what.html if you do not know what an Open
Relay is.
Basically, it appears that your server is helping spammers send Spam to me
and other Internet users. Please see
http://www.mail-abuse.org/tsi/ar-fix.html for help fixing this problem.
