September 17, 2003 - Response to RPCSS Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Windows

Once again CERT is warning of vulnerabilities in Microsoft systems that expose our customers and the Internet to, among other things, denial of service attacks. There is an immediate threat and as a preventive measure we are implementing the recommendations of the "CERT Advisory CA-2003-23 RPCSS Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Windows" which follows this message.

Specifically, at 6 pm Wednesday, September 17, Skyway West began blocking traffic to and from these Microsoft RPC ports:
135/TCP
135/UDP
137/UDP
138/UDP
139/TCP
445/TCP
445/UDP
593/TCP

Please contact support@sohoskyway.com if you need particular port(s) opened.

For a complete list of ports blocked to date for security reasons visit Ports Blocked for Security on our Security page.

An article about the immediate threat is at http://www.siliconvalley.com/mld/siliconvalley/6787298.htm

You may also wish to read Wednesday's article in the Vancouver Sun (section B Lower Mainland, right hand side) about how Telus' ADSL service has been crippled by their decision to allow viruses to pass through to their customers. Telus' response, "Blame it on the many viruses floating around the Net, and yourself for not properly dealing with them".

Skyway's ADSL network and customers were NOT affected.
